“Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”

Margaret Thatcher

A British politician, the longest-serving (1979-1990) Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the 20th century.

The meaning of this statement is to let us know what the right thing to do is. When you discipline yourself, you will have a positive outcome. With a positive outcome, you will learn to earn your pride, a high self-esteem, and you'll probably be 100% satisfied with yourself. Even if it's tough, when something's important, you must try your hardest. It will all pay off eventually. It is all worth it as long as you're doing something good. Choosing the right is the right way to go.

Balancing High school and Part- Time Work

Balancing High school and Part- Time Work

Part 3

Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North Hi9gh School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibility. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says. “In most cases, you can acquire a nice does of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences.” In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you. School Comes First

School work, including homework and studying for test, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are rushing through your assignments…or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.”

“What you are will show in what you do”

Thomas A. Edison

To me this statement means that what you do pays off and what pays off, describes who you are. The things you do is what lets us know how you are. For example, if you are an artist and you paint happy, clean, scenery. Then it's saying that you are a happy, clean person. You expressed yourself through that painting, giving us information on your thoughts. If you are a positive person, the things you do will be positive. It's the same thing when done the opposite way.

Part 2

Voicing your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both – work and study—successfully. To help answer this question, ask yourself:

v  Am I an organized person?

v  What kind of study habits do I have?

v  Do I make good use of my available time?

v  Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part- time job?

Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibility—and, of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying and socializing.

“If it not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.”

Marcus Aurelius

Roman Emperor from 161 AD to 18 AD

What I think this quote means is that choosing the right is the best thing to do, especially speaking the truth because it won't get you in trouble. You always have the chance to choose the wrong, but choosing the right will make the situation a million times easier. Lying will get you in many problems in the long run, that's not the right thing to do. For example, if you were to lie to your parents, telling them you're at a friend's house and you're actually at a party, something bad can happen to you and your parents wouldn't know where to find them.

Success in AP can also help you in other ways. AP helps you stand out in the admission process and offers the opportunity to learn from some of the most inspiring teachers in the world. Learn more about the AP Program.

For More Help in Choosing Courses

Use College Search to look up a specific college’s academic requirements to be sure you are on track to attend the college of your choice.

If you have concerns about your class schedule or progress in school, set up a meeting with your school counselor, teacher, or adviser. . There are many resources to help you with this process and with achieving your personal, college and career goals. Without goals, you meander all sorts of direction. Goals give you purpose, direction, enthusiasm, and passion for that which you really desire. Define your goals deliberately, evaluate your goals often and make changes as necessary, work hard to achieve your goals, and continue working hard until you actually do reach your goals.

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing”

Theodore Roosevelt

This quote, to me, lets me know that the right choice is ours. Whenever you have the chance, all you need to do is choose the right. The right will lead you into a direction/ path that not many people have been on. You must learn from your mistakes, and do what's best when possible. For example, if you find $1,000 on the floor, the right thing to do is to turn them in. You could've had the chance to take them, but it wasn't right.. so you chose the right.

The Arts

Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized tests. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.

Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts. Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identify their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

To be sure you are ready to take college-level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3.0 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success and college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.

Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get-by,” instead, take challenging and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher mountain peaks of achievement.

‘Tis the set of the sail

‘Tis the set of the sail
Ella wheeler Wilcox 1916

But to every mind there openeth,

A way, and a way, and away,

A high soul climbs the highway,

And the low soul gropes the low,

And in the between on the misty flats,

The rest drift to fro.

But to every man there openeth,

A high way and a low,

And every mind decideth,

The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails east,

And another west,

By the self-same winds that blow,

‘Tis the set of the sails

And not the gales,

That tells the way we go.

Like the winds of the sea

Are the waves of time,

As we journey along through life,

‘Tis the set of the soul,

That determines the goal,

And not the calm or the strife.

The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school courses schedule as a blueprint of your education they’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.

To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work

“A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder”

Thomas Carlyle

When a boat or ship is being driven off somewhere, the rudder is what helps it stay on the right path. Its obstacles are what make the boat turn in the first place, but the rudder keeps the boat from getting off course. Just like a boat, a person needs that guidance to help from swaying towards the wrong path. A goal is our equivalent to a rudder. A goal helps us have direction and purpose in life. Without a goal we are like a train without tracks, or a ship without a rudder.

Part 4

Getting the Most out of a Session

Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:

·         Decide what you’re going to do in advance.

·         Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.

·         Take turns teaching, to reinforce your knowledge.

·         Stick to the session topic.

By supplementing your individual study with a group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

Goals

“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goalposts are”

Arnold Glasgow

To me, this quote means that in order to succeed, you must have a goal, somewhere where you're aiming at. For example, how will you be able to graduate from college if you don't even know what you're studying for? Having goals makes things 100x easier/ less complicated for you therefore; always have something to look forward to. This quote is just a simpler way to explain goals

Part 1

Working Together Helps Everyone

You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.

The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:

·         Think out loud.

·         Share ideas.

·         Learn from one another.

In an effective study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together – explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s – and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.
